Build around the conversation.
The most inviting outdoor spaces give people a reason to stay. Arrange comfortable seating so guests can face one another. Add reachable side tables, soft light, and a place to put a blanket when the night cools.
Give the space a center.
A sculptural table, a planting arrangement, or a suitable fire feature can anchor the layout. Leave generous paths so the space feels easy to move through.
Choose a quiet palette.
Start with the colors already in your garden. Weathered wood, pale stone, warm clay, and leaf green sit comfortably together and let changing light take the lead.
Layer the evening light.
Use outdoor-rated fixtures to make paths and conversation areas welcoming. A few low points of light can create a softer atmosphere than one bright overhead source.
